A riverboat casino is a type of casino on a riverboat found in several states in the United States with frontage on the Mississippi River and its tributaries, or along the Gulf Coast. Several states authorized this type of casino in order to enable gambling but limit the areas where casinos could be constructed; it was a type of legal fiction as the riverboats were seldom if ever taken away from the dock.History[edit]
Paddlewheel riverboats had long been used on the Mississippi River and its tributaries to transport passengers and freight. After railroads largely superseded them, in the 20th century, they were more frequently used for entertainment excursions, sometimes for several hours, than for passage among riverfront towns. They were often a way for people to escape the heat of the town, as well as to enjoy live music and dancing. Gambling was also common on the riverboats, in card games and via slot machines.
When riverboat casinos were first approved in the late 20th century by the states, which generally prohibited gaming on land, these casinos were required to be located on ships that could sail away from the dock. In some areas, gambling was allowed only when the ship was sailing, as in the traditional excursions. They were approved in states with frontage along the Mississippi and its tributaries, including Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri. Illinois also allowed limited riverboat casinos in the Chicago metropolitan area, which has a Mississippi River connection through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, while Northwest Indiana has three ’riverboat’ casinos in harbors along Lake Michigan.
An unusual situation occurred on the Potomac River in the mid-20th century due to a quirk in the state border between Maryland and Virginia. The border is not in the middle of the river, rather it is at the low water mark on the Virginia side such that the entire river is in Maryland (except for small portions in the District of Columbia.) As a result, there were several riverboat casinos docked off of the Virginia shoreline in the 1950s, when gambling was legal in Maryland but not Virginia. As the river was in Maryland, visitors could park in Virginia, and walk across a pier, crossing the state line in the process.[1]
As an example, in 1994 Missouri voters approved amending the state constitution to allow ’games of chance’ on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. By 1998, ’according to the state Gaming Commission, just three of the 16 operations comprising Missouri’s $652-million riverboat gambling industry [were] clearly on the main river channel.’ The state supreme court had ruled that boats had to be ’solely over and in contact with the surface’ of the rivers.[2] Several casinos had been located on riverboats located in a moat or an area with water adjacent to a navigable waterway, leading them to be referred to as ’boats in moats.’[2] The state legislatures were unwilling to give up the revenues generated by gambling. Over time, they allowed gaming casinos to be built on stilts, though with the requirement they had to be over navigable water.
Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which destroyed most riverboat casinos and their associated facilities of hotels, restaurants, etc., in states along the Gulf Coast, several states changed their enabling legislation or amended constitutions. They permitted such casinos to be built on land within certain geographic limits from a navigable waterway. Most of Mississippi’s Gulf Coast riverboat casinos have been rebuilt on beachfronts with solid foundation systems since the hurricane.References[edit]

The 33-year-old poker pro from Kalamazoo, Michigan defeated a field of 652 entries to earn the title and the top payout of $260,000 after striking a heads-up deal with Anselmo Villarreal. This was the fifth-largest score of the World Series of Poker bracelet winner’s career, and it brought his lifetime earnings to just shy of $5.4 million.
In addition to the trophies and the money, Mandavia was also awarded 1,260 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion of this event. This win alone was enough to catapult him into fourth place in the POY race standings.

By the time the official eight-handed final table was set, Tim Capretta had worked his way into the chip lead, with Mandavia sitting on the next-largest stack. Three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Kristen Bicknell and World Poker Tour main event winner Alex Foxen, who are a couple, both made the final table. This was not the first time the pair achieved that feat here at Venetian. In 2018, the two poker pros made the final table of a $5,000 buy-in Mid-States Poker Tour event together, finishing in first and second for a combined total of $439,000.
Qing Liu was the first to be eliminated at the final table, with his pocket aces being cracked by Bicknell’s pocket jacks. Liu earned $24,939 while Bicknell climbed into the middle of the pack. Seven-handed action continued for quite a while, with multiple short-stack double-ups along the way. Mandavia overtook the lead during this stretch, winning a massive pot with a floped straight against the turned set of Capretta.
Yosif Nawabi’s run in this event came to an end when his A9 ran into the pocket queens of Alex Foxen, just moments after Foxen had spiked a gutshot to double up through Nawabi. The pocket pair held up and Nawabi was knocked out in seventh place ($35,208).Venetian Big Stack 2018 Results
Alex Foxen was the short stack when the next key hand arose. With blinds of 80,000-160,000 and a big-blind ante of 160,000, Foxen raised to 680,000 as the first to act. Capretta called from the hijack and the flop brought the 1082. Foxen shoved for 550,000 and Caprett called with AJ. Foxen rolled over the J8 for a leading pair of eights. The 10 on the turn kep him ahead, but the A on the river gave Capretta the winning hand. Foxen earned $45,477 for his sixth-place showing. A preflop race determined the next player to be eliminated. Derek Gregory called all-in from the big blind facing a shove from Kristin Bicknell out of the small blind. Kristen Bicknell climbed into the chip lead early in four-handed action, while Mandavia had fallen to the bottom of the leaderboard. He found a double-up with pocket eights against Bicknell’s A-7 offsuit to give himself some breathing room. Bicknell, on the other hand, continued to see her stack dwindle as short-handed action continued. In the end, she got all-in with 55 racing against the AK of Anselmo Villarreal. The board came down K63710 and Villarreal’s pair of kings sent Bicknell home with $90,954 for her latest deep run, brought her career tournament earnings to $5,525,426. They ultimately agreed to redistribute the remaining prize pool, with Mandavia taking home $260,000 while Villarrael would earn $253,441. The two agreed to run a flip for the title, and Mandavia’s 108 beat out Villarreall’s A3. The board came down Q73810 to give Mandavia two pair for the win.

The European League 2021 will keep the same format but have 9 days of play in 7 weeks, instead of the original 5. One match per week will take place on Mondays, with the last two playdays being on a weekend instead of Mondays.
In order to accommodate the new Six Invitational 2021, the first Stage of the European League has also been adjusted – it will now start on March 18th at 6pm CET, to make sure teams have sufficient time to prep and participate in either event.Format and Schedule of Six Invitational 2021
The Rainbow Six Invitational 2021 is having a slightly different format to normal. This is to accommodate the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The event was to be held in Paris this time around and without a live audience. While that has changed, the Six Invitational schedule is and format will remain the same.
The roster has expanded, bringing a couple more teams into the action. This is how the tournament is going to be held:

As if the 2017 World Series of Poker Main Event hasn’t been big enough news for the past week, the WSOP recently gave players outside of the United States something to look forward to, releasing the schedule for the 2017-2018 WSOP International Circuit.
The schedule consists of thirteen events, though the WSOP says that more stops are expected to be added for the part of the slate that will take place in 2018. The first stop will kick off shortly after the WSOP Main Event ends, August 2-8 in Iguazu, Argentina. Next year’s tour stops do not have set dates as of yet, but are rather listed as “January,” “March,” “Spring,” and “TBA.”
“Our partner casinos have done a terrific job bringing the WSOP brand and experience to their properties,” said WSOP Director Gregory Chochon in a press release. “The WSOP International Circuit is here to stay and we look forward to continually improving the experience and prize pools for the players.”
Just like with the United States “domestic” Circuit, each International Circuit stop will allow players the opportunity to qualify for the season-ending WSOP Global Casino Championship, and invitation-only, $1 million minimum prize pool tournament. Part of the problem is that since the rise of cage fighting and the launch of the UFC, eras have come and gone. How do you assess fighters who ruled over a specific time that had weaker competition in different promotions? Could one of today’s rising stars take out a dominant force like Chuck Liddell, Royce Gracie, Wanderlei Silva or Kazushi Sakuraba in their prime?
For our list of the 25 greatest MMA fighters of all time, we tried to balance the criteria. A fighter’s overall career resume mattered. 3 card poker strategy wizard of odds. But not as much as their performance at their peak. The eye test was important. But not as important as the competition a fighter faced and how they handled that competition.
Ultimately, we valued fighters who put together multiple wins (often in multiple divisions) over others who were considered among the greatest of all time. You might say that produced recency bias, especially considering pioneer Gracie didn’t make our list and that our No. 25 is an all-time fan favorite.
The list has also been updated to reflect high-profile wins by Stipe Miocic and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
25. Chuck Liddell
Might as well start this list with some controversy. For the record, I began watching the UFC in 2005. At the time, Chuck Liddell was the biggest star and the person most responsible for making the sport of MMA popular. He was a phenom and the fact that he barely made this list is going to upset old-school fans. Yet, it’s easy to forget Liddell’s peak run didn’t last all that long and it wasn’t against the toughest competition. During his seven-win run atop the UFC, four fights came against Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture. Liddell was a human highlight reel. But was he a better mixed martial artist than Cain Velasquez, Shogun Rua, Vito Belfort, Fabricio Werdum and Rampage Jackson, who were considered for this final spot? In the end, Liddell’s peak years and the way he finished guys put him over the edge..just barely.
24. Valentina Shevchenko
Some might find it hard to rank women and men together on a list like this. Not me. Many of the male fighters on this list never faced each other either. Valentina Shevchenko is terrifying and the greatest female striker in MMA history. She’s picked apart the likes of Jessica Eye, Holly Holm, Joanna J 1/4 u0119drzejczyk and Julianna Pena. Her only two losses since joining the UFC are to Amanda Nunes, the greatest female mixed martial artist of all time. And there’s a solid case to be made that Shevchenko won that second fight.
23. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Had Big Nog stopped fighting after Pride 24, he would still be considered an all-time great. At that point, he was coming off a streak of 13 straight wins against top-notch competition. Nogueira’s only knock is that he couldn’t get past Fedor Emelianenko in his prime. But no one could. Big Nog did earn big wins over Heath Herring (to win the inaugural Pride Heavyweight Championship), Bob Sapp, Dan Henderson, Ricco Rodriguez, Mirko Cro Crop, Fabricio Werdum and Tim Sylvia (for the UFC Heavyweight Championship). Nogueira was battle-worn by the time he got to the UFC and still managed to win a title in the top promotion in the world.
22. Eddie Alvarez
To truly appreciate Eddie Alvarez, you have to examine his time in both the UFC and Bellator. He was great in both and the competition Alvarez faced remains a who’s who in MMA today. Alvarez always put on a show for fans. His UFC stretch of beating Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis and Rafael dos Anjos was as good as the lightweight division had seen. And let us not forget that Alvarez was a welterweight champion early in his career, showcasing his ability to excel in multiple divisions.
21. Robbie Lawler
Throughout his career, Robbie Lawler came to finish fights. That didn’t get him too far during his first run in the UFC once he ran into elite competition. Yet, Lawler’s second run in the promotion, which began in 2013, will put him in the Hall of Fame one day. His stretch as champion was nothing short of brilliant while holding two wins over Carlos Condit, Johny Hendricks and Rory McDonald (their second fight is, in my opinion, the most entertaining battle in MMA history).
20. Israel Adesanya
Too soon for Adesanya? Maybe. But look at what he’s done since entering the UFC. In his last six fights, Adesanya has consecutive wins over Brad Tavares, Derek Brunson, Anderson Silva, Kelvin Gastelum, Robert Whitaker and Yoel Romero. Silva is an all-time great, while Whitaker and Romero would have surely made this list had they not run into Adesanya. The 30-year-old has earned his spot and will only move up from here.
19. Dan Henderson
After becoming a standout with his epic bouts in Pride, Dan Henderson’s arrival to the UFC was much anticipated. But it didn’t go as planned the first time around. Still, his KO of Michael Bisping might be the best finish in UFC history. Henderson moved on to Strikeforce, where he regained his mojo and took out the great Fedor Emelianenko. Upon his return to the UFC, Hendo gave us one of the greatest fights in MMA history against Shogun Rua.
18. B.J. Penn
We have to look past the last several years of B.J. Penn’s career, because, quite frankly, they’ve been hard watch. Yet, during his prime, Penn was one of the most exciting fighters in MMA. He made some odd career choices during his first run with the UFC. But his raw talent was unmatched. After getting bounced from welterweight by Matt Hughes in 2006, Penn moved back down to lightweight and was unstoppable. His five wins in the division (four of which came with the UFC Lightweight Championship on the line) were all finishes. Penn did attempt to go back to welterweight, losing to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 94. Yet, by then he was cemented as icon.
17. Henry Cejudo
Two years ago, it’s hard to imagine we’d be putting Henry Cejudo on this list. His UFC career had been a mixed bag, beginning with two losses -- one to Demetrious Johnson and then a split decision to Joseph Benavidez after Cejudo was deducted a point for low blows. Then came one of the greatest runs in UFC history. Cejudo shocked the world and beat Johnson in their closely contested rematch. Cejudo’s last six wins are as impressive as almost any on this list, including wins over TJ Dillashaw and Dominick Cruz. In between those fights, Cejudo became a two-division champ after KO’ing Marlon Moraes to win the UFC Bantamweight Championship.
16. Matt Hughes
Coming before Georges St-Pierre is no easy task from a historical standpoint. But Matt Hughes certainly made the UFC Welterweight Division. Hughes won the championship almost by accident, in a double knockout against Carlos Newton that went Hughes’ way. From then on, Hughes was a monster. He beat Newton decisively in a rematch and then scored impressive wins against Sean Sherk and Frank Trigg. BJ Penn upset Hughes at UFC 46. But Hughes would eventually go on to avenge that loss. The competition at welterweight would get better after Hughes’ run was over. But he has holds wins over two of the biggest names on this list in their prime (including Georges St-Pierre). That, and Hughes’ unprecedented dominance gets him here.
15. Randy CoutureBest P4p Mma Fighters Of All Time Now
Randy Couture had one of the greatest careers in MMA history. But it was a roller coaster ride, making it hard to determine when his prime was. Couture had as many as four great runs with the UFC. The legend of “The Natural” began with two amazing fights against Pedro Rizzo. He would go on to lose to Josh Barnett (who tested positive for banned substances) and Ricco Rodriguez the following year. Yet, Couture bounced back at light heavyweight, beating Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz and splitting a two-fight series with Vitor Belfort. It wasn’t a stretch of dominance like some of the others on this list. But it was an impressive showing in two highly competitive divisions. There’s something to be said for remaining in your prime for such a long period.
14. Frankie Edgar
Everyone’s favorite underdog until he became one of the greatest fighters in history. Frankie Edgar always looked undersized. But that never stopped him from beating the best lightweights on the planet, including Sean Sherk, Hermes Franca, Jim Miller, Tyson Griffin and BJ Penn (twice). Edgar was the man who stopped Penn’s best career stretch. Two questionable decision losses to Benson Henderson pushed Edgar up to featherweight where he, again, became a title contender with wins over elite fighters. Edgar is one of the best mixed martial artists of all time in two divisions. Few can say that.
12. Max Holloway
Recent losses shouldn’t taint what Max Holloway has accomplished over the past six years. Since losing back-to-back fights to Dennis Bermudez and Conor McGregor early in his career, Holloway has 14 wins with most of them are against strong competition. That list includes Frankie Edgar, Brian Ortega, Jose Aldo (twice), Anthony Pettis, Ricardo Lamas, Jeremy Stevens, Charles Oliveira and Cub Swanson. You could say he over-reached in trying to become a two-division champ against Dustin Poirier. But Holloway has a chance to avenge his recent loss at featherweight against Alexander Volkanovski. Should he do that, Holloway’s legacy as the greatest featherweight of all time could be guaranteed.
12. Dominick Cruz
If it weren’t for injuries, Dominick Cruz might have the greatest career of any MMA fighter. And yet, it’s still quite impressive the way it is. Upon Cruz’s return to the WEC in 2008, he became a well-rounded force, beating future UFC title contenders like Joseph Benavidez and Ian McCall before getting his rematch against Urijah Faber and winning the UFC Bantamweight Championship at UFC 132. Cruz dominated that fight. But the crown jewel of his career may be his win over Demetrious Johnson at bantamweight. It’s the only clear cut win someone has over Johnson in his prime.
11. Daniel Cormier
Is easy to focus on Cormier’s career as him being the greatest light heavyweight in UFC history not named Jon Jones. But consider before Cormier joined the UFC he was dominating heavyweights like Antonio Silva and Josh Barnett in Strikeforce. Cormier’s coming-out party was a dominant performance against Frank Mir in Cormier’s UFC debut. Cormier never coasted on his wrestling, even though he could have, becoming a formidable striker. If he beats Stipe Miocic at UFC 241, Cormier will go down as the greatest heavyweight in UFC history. It’s hard to get past the two losses to Jon Jones (granted, one was overturned due to a positive drug test by Jones). And maybe we’re short-changing Cormier because of them. But he still makes the top-10.
10. Amanda Nunes
Some MMA purists won’t want to see a woman this high on the list. They’ll say Amanda Nunes didn’t face the same level of competition as the men. But take the greatest female MMA fighters of all time and Nunes has beaten all that were willing to face her, usually in spectacular fashion. That includes Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm, Miesha Tate, Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko (twice). After an uneven start to her career, the past half-decade has seen Nunes be as dominant as any fighter – male or female – in UFC history. Oh, and she’s a double champion who has successfully defended BOTH of her titles.
9. Jose Aldo
When you think of Jose Aldo, it’s easy to picture his 13-second knockout loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 194. Sure, it would have been nice to see Aldo try and avenge that loss. But what he accomplished before that fight was astonishing. Aldo was an assassin during his early days at WEC, with his breakthrough performance coming when he TKO’d Cub Swanson with a flying knee at WEC 41. Aldo then dominated the promotion’s mega-stars Mike Brown and Urijah Faber. When he joined the UFC, Aldo all but closed out the featherweight division until he ran into McGregor’s fist. There are some people high enough on Aldo to put him atop of this list. I’m not quite as sold on the strength his competition, especially after losses to Conor McGregor and Max Holloway. But that’s just me.
8. Stipe Miocic

From a career standpoint, a TKO loss to Stefan Struve hurts Stipe Miocic’s resume a bit. But he became a different fighter after that. After losing a close war to Junior dos Santos in 2014, Miocic fine-tuned his skills and went on the greatest run in the history for a UFC Heavyweight Division that is as competitive as its ever been. Miocic is a quiet guy. But his wins from 2015 on speak for themselves: Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos (in a decisive rematch). Those are all Hall of Fame level names. Miocic also beat Francis Ngannou at UFC 220, controlling a seemingly unstoppable force that may very well be the future of the heavyweight division. Miocic’s trilogy fight win over Cormier now cements him as an all-time great.
7. Conor McGregor
Is Conor McGregor really retired? If he is, he’s is an icon. No question. Don’t let the hype and showmanship fool you. McGregor was a dominant force possessing a left-hand for the ages. Following the momentum of an early win against Max Holloway in 2013, McGregor beat Diego Brandao (a former “The Ultimate Fighter” winner), tough veteran Dennis Siver, longtime contender Chad Mendes and put Jose Aldo’s lights out. McGregor then lost to Nate Diaz in a fight the former was winning until he ran out of gas. McGregor would avenge that loss in a classic rematch before beating Eddie Alvarez to become a two-division champion. If McGregor wants to move into the top five on this list, he’ll need to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov again and win. But there’s no denying his greatness even without that rematch.
6. Anderson Silva
From April 2006 through October 2012, Silva recorded 17 consecutive wins, 16 in the UFC. But it wasn’t just that streak (bested only by Jones in terms of UFC wins), it was the way Silva destroyed people. In his UFC debut, Silva brutalized Chris Leben, one of the toughest guys in the promotion’s history. Four months later, he would KO Rich Franklin to win the UFC Middleweight Championship. Franklin, a future Hall of Famer, was unstoppable for two years before Silva made him look like a scrub. Most of Silva’s fights weren’t close to competitive. He made fighters like Dan Henderson, Patrick Cote and Franklin (again) look average. Silva answered a close call to Chael Sonnen with dominating wins against Vitor Belfort, Yushin Okami and Sonnen in a quick rematch. And when Silva got bored during that time, he beat up and embarrassed light heavyweights like Stephan Bonnar, Forrest Griffin and James Irvin. Yes, Silva was dominant in an era where the competition wasn’t as strong as it is now. But was that just because Silva made those guys look so bad?
5. Demetrious Johnson
Johnson’s peak period may still be ongoing. His one loss since 2013 was a split decision to Henry Cejudo (a fighter he TKO’d during their first fight) that could have gone either way. Johnson left no question about who was the best in the world during his fights, dominating each opponent in every aspect of MMA. The only knock against Johnson is that he never went up a division after clearing out flyweight. Could he have captured two UFC belts while still in his prime? We can assume yes. But we may never know.
4. Fedor Emelianenko
There’s this idea that Fedor Emelianenko’s all-time rating takes a hit because he never fought in the UFC. In terms of looking at an entire career resume, perhaps that is true. But if we’re just looking at fighters’ prime periods, Emelianenko lays claim to the most impressive streak in MMA history with 27 consecutive wins. And he did it against some of the all-time greats, including Mark Coleman (twice), Kevin Randleman, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice), Mirko Cro Cop and Mark Hunt. Emelianenko’s dominance ran from 2000-2009. During that time, there isn’t a UFC champion that would have been favored in a fight against him. Yes, it would have been nice to see him take out all of the UFC’s elite during that time (Though, he beat several of them in other promotions). But it shouldn’t take away from his Mt. 3. Khabib Nurmagomedov
If he is done, Nurmagomedov will go out undefeated with the answer to the question of whether anyone can beat him being no. His first true test, at least on paper, came against Rafael dos Anjos at a UFC event in 2014. That fight was not competitive. In fact, none of Nurmagomedov’s fights in the UFC have been, despite top-notch opponents like Michael Johnson, Edson Barboza, Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. It’s hard to argue with Nurmagomedov’s dominance up until this point. His stretch against McGregor, Poirier and most recently Justin Gaethje ranks as, perhaps, the best three-fight run in UFC history. We may be a bit emotional with Khabib declaring he’s retiring, but he’s earned this spot.
2. Jon Jones
Jon “Bones” Jones didn’t waste any time making a name for himself in the UFC. His spinning back elbow against Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94 is a star-is-born moment. But Jones’ first truly great performance was technically a loss. He demolished Matt Hamill only to be disqualified for using illegal downward elbows. Hamill could barely stand to awarded the victory. From that point on, Jones was unstoppable. He didn’t just beat people. He demolished them, including seven (yes, seven!) surefire, future UFC Hall of Famers. Most of those victories coming via finishes. You could maybe make the case Jones wasn’t the same after his classic fight with Alexander Gustafsson. Yet, he went on to beat Glover Teixeira and Ovince Saint Preux (without surrendering around to either) and scored two wins over Daniel Cormier (Though, one was overturned due to a positive drug test). Jones’ recent fights haven’t been all that entertaining, especially his razor-close decision win against Dominick Reyes. Jones is moving up to heavyweight. If he wins a title there, it would be hard to argue with his GOAT status.

On February 8th & 9th the fan favorite Demolition Derby returns to the Florida State Fair, but it all started in 1904. The American Flag only had 45 stars, Theodore Roosevelt was our president, and Florida was on an up swing. It was also the year that T.J. Laud-Brown (the manager of the Tampa Bay Hotel) came up with a great idea to drive traffic to the Tampa area. His plan was to bring the biggest fair in Florida to Tampa! He worked hard to convince the city founders and the rail line that they needed to bring the South Florida Fair to the grounds of the Tampa Bay Hotel.
The South Florida Fair Association was formed and plans for a new exhibition were proposed. That first Fair had simple attractions and was held in a single building on a 27-acre plot adjoining the Henry B. Plant’s Tampa Bay Hotel, where the University of Tampa stands today. This event soon was known as the Florida State Mid-Winter Festival and was the place to be! Families from near and far would come to the festival to play games, eat fair food and win bragging rights for their prized bull, best pie, or most beautiful quilt.
In 2020 the Florida State Fair is bring back something a bit heavier than a quilt, the good old fashion smashing and crashing that is the DEMOLITION DERBY. This years event will also feature some heavy hitting full contact racing as well.

Last month, Sole Volante captured the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs with a closing rush to defeat the favored Independence Hall. With that move forward in his belt, the son of Karakontie will now attempt the next step in the Grade 2, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby this Saturday. But he did not scare anyone off.
A crowded field of 12 entered this 2020 Kentucky Derby prep, including Mucho Macho Man Stakes winner Chance It, maiden-winner Spa City and the Todd Pletcher trio of Market Analysis, Texas Swing and Unrighteous. It all gives Sole Volante backers plenty to think about.

The Tampa Bay Derby is carded as Race 11 on with a post time of 5:32 ET. Here’s a closer look at the field with the morning line:
1. Texas Swing, 12-1 (Curlin – Todd Pletcher/Javier Castellano – 2: 1-0-0): If nothing else, the pedigree for this Pletcher-trained colt is a beautiful one for longer distances. In addition to Curlin, his dam Derby Eve is a half-sister to 2008 Travers Stakes (G1) winner Colonel John. It is no wonder Texas Swing ran evenly in his career debut when attempting a six-furlong sprint, only finishing a mild fourth. He improved on the stretch out in a local two-turn route, winning by 1 1/4 lengths. He did not run fast on the TimeformUS scale, though, only earning a 102. Despite the low figure, a move forward is possible. Use underneath.

2. Spa City, 10-1 (Street Sense – Kiaran McLaughlin/Daniel Centeno – 3: 1-1-0): After two Gulfstream Park losses at shorter distances, Spa City stepped up to the plate in his third start. He broke his maiden in a nine-furlong race, winning by one length over a green Unrighteous after a pressing trip. Telephone Talker finished 15 3/4 lengths behind Spa City in third. But will he still run the same race cutting back to 1 1/16 miles? Another concern is whether Spa City gets caught in traffic from this post, especially with Relentless Dancer probable to break for the lead. Should he break well and secure a good position, the talent is there. Win contender.
3. Relentless Dancer, 12-1 (Midshipman – Michael Maker/Antonio Gallardo – 4: 2-0-0): His Holy Bull Stakes (G3) effort wasn’t terrible. He pressed a talented pacesetter in Ete Indien and failed to handle the heat as Tiz the Law came into the picture. Relentless Dancer faded to fourth, a whopping 18 ¾ lengths behind Tiz the Law. Despite his commendable effort, it is still difficult to back a horse who lost by such a margin. He likely will find a home cutting back in distance. Toss.
4. Chance It, 5/2 (Currency Swap – Saffie Joseph Jr./Paco Lopez – 6: 4-2-0): His hard-fought Mucho Macho Man Stakes is impressive to watch at first, as he moved through the rail and initially got pinned on the turn. But he fought back and outkicked As Seen On Tv once that horse began to drift out. The concern is that As Seen On Tv finished a distant third last Saturday in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), 8 3/4 lengths behind the flashy Ete Indien. But the third-place Sole Volante did return to win the Sam F. Davis locally, albeit with a generous pace setup. For what it is worth, Chance It is training like a horse feeling great. In particular, watch his sharp Feb. 17 work in company with Coach Temple and Flora Fantasy. Win contender.
5. Market Analysis, 8-1 (Honor Code – Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez – 1: 1-0-0): This Pletcher colt came into his career debut at Gulfstream hyped off some impressive workouts, and he backed up the breezes with a 3/4-length win over Attachment Rate with a 103 TimeformUS Speed Figure. The runner-up went on to break his maiden in his next start, also with a 103. Also, the sixth-place Unconquered Lea broke his maiden over turf over Express Pharoah, who had run fifth in the race. But the third-place Precise Dancer flopped next time, finishing a dismal eighth. Market Analysis continues to work well, and his pedigree says stretching out will suit him. Watch his price, though, as he looks like the most talented Pletcher runner of the barn’s trio here. Win contender.
6. Mo Mosa, 30-1 (Uncle Mo – Michael Maker/Pablo Morales – 3: 1-1-1): Based on his three starts, he is hard to endorse. Mo Mosa’s lone win came at Turfway Park on Feb. 13, spurting away by 5 3/4 lengths after setting the pace. But this marks Mo Mosa’s first dirt start, and it comes against hungry Kentucky Derby candidates. California Chrome fans will recognize owner Perry Martin, half of his original partnership. But that alone isn’t a sign Mo Mosa can switch from synthetic to dirt in Grade 2 company and pull off the upset. Toss.
7. Sole Volante, 2-1 (Karakontie – Patrick Biancone/Florent Geroux – 4: 3-0-1): Given his Sam F. Davis victory over the well-hyped Independence Hall, it’s tough to dismiss Sole Volante as a contender. But this closer enjoyed a nice pace setup thanks to a speed duel between Premier Star and Chapalu. Remember that one start before, he failed to catch Chance It and As Seen On Tv in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream. In this spot, Sole Volante might need another contested pace to defeat Chance It, let alone the newer faces. He could win, but accepting a low price is a bad idea. Use underneath.
8. Letmeno, 12-1 (Twirling Candy – Ian Wilkes/Chris Landeros – 4: 1-1-1): In his return to the races after a closing fourth in the Iroquois Stakes (G3) last fall, this colt finished third by five lengths in a local allowance optional claimer won by the Gouverneur Morris. That winner is another hyped Pletcher runner, but the jury is out on whether he is a major player on the Derby trail. As Dennis’ Moment evidenced in the Fountain of Youth last weekend, the Iroquois proved a negative race overall, too. Toss.
9. Unrighteous, 20-1 (Violence – Todd Pletcher/Joe Bravo – 2: 0-1-0): From a value standpoint, this is an interesting colt. Yes, he is still a maiden. Would the experienced Pletcher enter this colt if he didn’t think much of him? Also, he only lost to Spa City by one length at Gulfstream. Unrighteous ran awkwardly in the stretch, but he improved several lengths off his sprint career debut by posting a 104 on the TimeformUS scale, which is mildly competitive in this spot. Keep in mind that Gulfstream only ran one nine-furlong dirt race that day and no other two-turn dirt races. The figure was likely a difficult one to make. He could move forward. Live longshot.
10. Bye Bye Melvin, 20-1 (Uncle Mo – Graham Motion/Julien Leparoux – 5: 2-0-1): Motion is a respected trainer who knows how to win the Kentucky Derby. But this Uncle Mo’s only dirt start resulted in a mild third-place finish in a Keeneland maiden race last October. He lost by 5 1/4 lengths to Liam’s Legend, who finished a dismal 11th in the UAE Two Thousand Guineas last month. Toss.
11. King Guillermo, 15-1 (Uncle Mo – Juan Carlos Avila/Samy Camacho – 3: 1-0-1): His maiden win came last November at Gulfstream, when he set the pace and won by 6 1/4 lengths on turf. Later in the month, he then finished third to Sole Volante in the Pulpit Stakes on turf after chasing a fast pace and taking the lead momentarily before the winner flew by. Without dirt wins, he is tough to endorse. Toss.
12. Tons of Gold, 30-1 (Tonalist – Alexis Delgado/Angel Suarez – 8: 0-2-2): Here is another maiden. This Tonalist colt has lost eight times, with his most recent start resulting in a nine-length defeat to Gotham Stakes (G3) contender Attachment Rate at Gulfstream. He also drew the outside post and does not own the speed to clear. Derby fever is real. Toss.
Conclusion: This is a difficult race to narrow to a single win pick. But given Sole Volante is not proven in a slower pace scenario on dirt, he is a play-against.
The Gulfstream race featuring Spa City and Unrighteous looks strong at first glance, and Chance It’s morning workouts indicate a top performance is coming. Plus, Market Analysis could move forward in his second career start after a good debut.
One idea is to box those four, especially if Unrighteous remains at 20-1. His maiden status will scare bettors away and keep the value at double-digits. 4. Cincinnati: The Bearcats topped off an unbeaten season with an AAC Championship game win over #24 Tulsa. It took a last-second field goal, but Cincinnati’s pedigree shouldn’t be questioned. It was unfortunate that they didn’t receive consideration for the CFP, but they get a chance to prove the committee wrong against Georgia in the Peach Bowl. (Previous: 5)
5. Texas A&M: Texas A&M finished the season with their only loss being Alabama. That’s a tough loss, but it was a 28-point blowout. Those who believe the Aggies should have found their way into the fourth CFP spot have a legitimate argument– it was an impressive season for them. (Previous: 6)
6. Notre Dame: The Irish found their way into the College Football Playoff, but are massive underdogs as they face Alabama. They’re a good team, but Clemson proved that they don’t belong in the top tier in the country. (Previous: 3)
7. Indiana: The Hoosiers were left for dead after losing star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. That is, until they weren’t. Indiana proved they’re more than Penix on the back of a sturdy defense. Their only loss this season was a nailbiter to Ohio State and Indiana is in business. (Previous: 8)
8. Oklahoma: Oklahoma was able to take care of business in the Big 12 and bring home their 50th conference title. While their two losses keeps them firmly short of the CFP, they get Florida in the Cotton Bowl in what might be the best bowl matchup of the year. (Previous: 9)
9. Florida: It’s an uncomfortable truth, but the Florida Gators are still an excellent football team. They kept their game with Alabama within one score– something no one else on their schedule has done (not Georgia, not Texas A&M).
